This is a direct copy/paste from another forum in answer to a question about what percentage of the population (of the USA) are gay:
Out of these the most meaningful figure is the 2-3% one, which seems to fit my experience from work etc.

When I was at boarding school, the 30% figure was nearer the mark but most of that would be "adolescent fooling around".

An even more interesting fact is Alfred Kinsey's theory of sexuality, very interesting if you happen to google it or check it out on wikipedia (a more reliable source of info). He states that 90 percent of the population are to some extent bisexual and 4 percent are 100% homosexual and 6 percent are 100% heterosexual. When you think about it, it is very reasonable and even more so interesting.

They also say 2% of the population has higher intellegence. So 2% gay = 2% higher intellegence. Interesting.(!)

Somewhere i read that something like 40% of females had had some kind of homosexual encounter. And it was more for males.

I just did the math, and in America, the number of gays = the population of New York City (not the metropolitan area, the actual city), and in the world, the number of gays = the population of Brazil. So, while 2-3% might seem small, it's really not.

From what I've read the majority of completely anonymous surveys of adults only indicates the gay / bi population is at between 9-11% of the population.

It is impossible to pin an exact figure on it. Numerous surveys all come up with different answers, depending on whether or not they are anonymous, where they take place, which country, the age-range of participants, the wording of the question, the interpretation of the answers etc.

Any figure between maybe 1% and 10% could be given as the outcome and would be correct for that survey or research with the way it was carried out.

At best we can take an average across them all as an approximate guide.

  14. ahg lol, i feel like i am in stat class and should be asking what the standard Deviation is, 2-3%, it sorta small, sorta not. But in my town i think there are far too many lesbians and not enough gay men. so unfair.

In the book, "why do Men Have Nipples," it is because for the first few days (maybe weeks) all embryos develop as females and thus the nipples. The author also says that this can help to explain the normalcy of homosexuality. Since we were all women at one time, it makes sense that some guys would remain attracted men as women would. Kind of random I know. Just trying to put my two cents in.
