Did your parents spank you?

Yea. You talked back, you felt the back of a hand. Stepdad wanted to make a point, they'd do that thing where they grab your face in one hand and squeeze it so look at him and remember that you are under his control. I don't think I'll use corporal punishment with my kids, but I was always much more bugged by the control obsession than by the hitting.

 

I did get spanked.

Although I've learned that while I did learn my lessons through fear, I have also learned

A. Fear shouldn't be the lesson to learn and
B. Not everybody works that way. I have a particular sibling who's been spanked many times, and still continues their misbehavior at the age of 12.

However, I do know that it would be unwise to speak out against my parents.

I wasn't a bad kid, either. I was a precocious and inquisitive kid born to parents who were older and probably too tired to have had a kid at their age.

I probably have never wanted kids because of that. Not totally sure.

 

Interesting that people want to insinuate that it's child abuse and that half of EC's parents are child abusers. Yea okay.

 

I agree. It all depends on how much and for what reason. Most people who were swatted every now and then have not suffered the repercussions of what is now so freely called child abuse.

 

Exactly. I was actually surprised that this thread didn't turn into a debate over spanking, and I'd rather it not go that way, but I find it a bit offensive that some people insinuate that my parents abused me. My parents were and are amazing parents, and I feel very lucky. People use the term very loosely I agree. Abuse is purposeful and malicious. Most people who spanked did so simply because that's what they knew punishment to be for acting out.

Yes, but not often. They took away priviledges away mostly.

 

I don't agree with spanking, but I wouldn't call it "child abuse". That's going too far and takes away from actual child abuse.

 

Mostly when I was little. They stopped doing it as I got older, and eventually they stopped slapping me as well. Basically I've been physically pain-free ever since age 14. I think it helps that they got older and weaker, and I got better at being disciplined and a little more eloquent.

 

I was never spanked by my dad. And to be spanked by him means quite a lot. My sister got the taste of it, though,


My mom did spank me about 5 times my whole life. I believe that I always the good kid. Almost too good. Now I feel like I should have been a little more rougher. I can't be this perfect persona anymore.

 

My father and mother rarely spanked me, if at all. It was my step-father that did the spanking.

No, not me. I did go to a boarding school for a while. They had the cane there. I didn't get it or spanked there, but I did get the slipper many a time. That never did me any harm, and taught me to have respect for others.
I find spanking repulsive however, and feel it is abuse. Someone on here yesterday, said that her father once spanked her for having her two naked dolls kissing. It really upset me actually, and I thought it was cruel, and indeed, barbaric. She was only learning about life and how she felt.

My Dad did once or twice. I don't agree with corporal punishment, so, if I ever have kids, that won't be happening
