Default Gay support helplines etc

There is a list of UK gay support helplines on this page, together with some limited information for other countries.

There is also a list here which appears to contain more links but may be out of date.

Most of these helplines will probably provide email based support as well as telephone. It is often useful to refer to a local helpline for local information such as details of venues and events, sexual health clinics, free condom supplies etc.

If you are aware of similar lists of services in other countries please add then here. List pages are more useful than links to one or two specific groups.

If you use a gay support telephone helpline, does it show up on the monthly bill?

I've never used one because I'm afraid my parents will look through all the numbers and find out.

I don't know if I'm the only Australian on here. But I thought I would also add to this thread some Australian helpline numbers.

This is basically a whole database of Australian numbers which has some numbers for gays and lesbians:

It depends whether they are toll-free numbers or not, and whether your telephone bill shows individual calls or just a total. It may be best to use your own mobile phone (cellphone) rather than the home phone.

You can email them too, which may be better if you want info rather than a discussion.

If it's toll-free, does it not show? I'd better review the phone bill when it comes. I think it lists everything because I think my parents have reviewed it and looked over strange phone numbers in the past.

My mobile is a line added on to my parents' contract, so they get all my calls there, too. I'll email them if I ever need help, I guess.

But I've got EC!

In the UK, calls to toll free (0800) numbers through BT and the major mobile phone networks do not show on the bill at all. However I do not know the situation in other countries, so you would need to check the situation with the telephone provider.

Or use a mobile (perhaps borrow a friend's who has a pay-as-you-go package if yours is billed) or a public payphone. If you work you may be able to use the phone there (with permission, obviously).

In Australia every number shows up. Not too sure about the Optus network though because none of my friends are with them.

When I called The Trevor Hotline a few years ago, it didn't show up on the bill, and trust me. I looked.

I just called the Trevor Hotline, and the second he answered and started talking I panicked and hung up. Pretty upset with myself right now, thought I was past this. He sounded nice too :/
